Seven questions about World Heritage sites and this list.
There are 1,273 World Heritage sites: 991 cultural, 240 natural and 42 mixed. They stand in 173 of the 196 countries that have signed the World Heritage Convention, and 51 of them cross a border. The World Heritage Committee added 25 in 2026, among them Aalto Works, Alamūt Castle and Related Fortifications and Amazonia Theaters.
Italy, with 62, followed by China (61), France (56), Germany (55) and Spain (50). A site shared between countries counts toward each of them, as UNESCO counts it — Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe alone is shared by 18 countries.
The first 12 were inscribed in 1978: Galápagos Islands (Ecuador), City of Quito (Ecuador), Aachen Cathedral (Germany), L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site (Canada), Simien National Park (Ethiopia), Rock-Hewn Churches, Lalibela (Ethiopia), Nahanni National Park (Canada), Island of Gorée (Senegal), Mesa Verde National Park (United States), Yellowstone National Park (United States), Historic Centre of Kraków (Poland) and Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines (Poland).
Cultural sites are inscribed for what people made — monuments, historic cities, archaeological sites, cultural landscapes — and make up 991 of the list. Natural sites (240) are inscribed for geology, ecosystems, habitats or natural beauty. The 42 mixed sites meet both a cultural and a natural criterion.
The List of World Heritage in Danger flags sites whose value is under serious threat — from armed conflict, natural disaster, uncontrolled development, poaching or pollution — so that the world can help protect them. 58 sites are on it now, the most in Syria (6), then the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya, Palestine, Ukraine and Yemen (4 each). A site comes off when the threat is dealt with; one that loses the qualities it was inscribed for can be deleted from the World Heritage List altogether, which has happened three times: the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in Oman (2007), the Dresden Elbe Valley in Germany (2009) and Liverpool's Maritime Mercantile City in the United Kingdom (2021).
A country first puts the place on its national Tentative List, then submits a full nomination. Cultural nominations are evaluated by ICOMOS and natural ones by IUCN, and the World Heritage Committee decides at its annual session, usually in July. To be inscribed a place must show "outstanding universal value" against at least one of ten criteria, and be adequately protected and managed.
From UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre: the site list, categories, inscription years and coordinates are from its official list, and the danger status from its List of World Heritage in Danger. Our counts are checked against the totals UNESCO publishes on whc.unesco.org. How we source and check figures is set out in our editorial guidelines.
