15 Biggest Airport Terminals in the World (2026)

The record

The record The biggest airport terminal in the world is Dubai International Airport Terminal 3, in the United Arab Emirates — 1,713,000 m² (18,438,579 sq ft), terminal floor area. Source: Wikipedia (Dubai International Terminal 3) + Guinness World Records. Verified .

Not one American airport makes this list. Denver's Jeppesen Terminal, among the largest in the United States, covers roughly 241,500 m² — less than half the size of the terminal that finishes fifteenth here. The measure is gross floor area: one terminal building plus the concourses operated as part of it.

That is why Dubai's Terminal 3 counts all three of its concourses to reach 1,713,000 m², and why Beijing Daxing is listed at the 700,000 m² of its terminal rather than the 1.43 million often quoted once the ground-transport centre is folded in.

Shared satellites are out, so Shanghai Pudong's 622,000 m² concourse, which serves two terminals rather than one, has no place here. So is anything not yet flying, which rules out Xiamen Xiang'an. Every terminal below is open today, and they run from 530,000 m² to 1,713,000 m² across eight countries.

The Ranking at a Glance

Fun Facts About the World's Biggest Airport Terminals

  • The world's largest airport building is mostly underground — Dubai Terminal 3 was built beneath the taxiways, so aircraft manoeuvre directly above the heads of passengers checking in below.
  • The record changed hands twice in 2008. Beijing Capital Terminal 3 opened that spring as the largest building in the world by floor area, and lost the world record barely seven months later when Dubai Terminal 3 opened in October.
  • Hong Kong Terminal 1 held the Guinness World Record for the largest airport passenger terminal building when it opened in 1998, at a floor area of 550,000 m². Later expansions have since taken it to 570,000 m².
  • Not one American terminal makes the top fifteen. Denver's Jeppesen Terminal, among the largest in the United States at roughly 241,500 m², is less than half the size of the terminal ranked fifteenth here.
  • Two terminals tie to the square metre. Beijing Daxing and Zayed Terminal A in Abu Dhabi are both exactly 700,000 m², despite being built four years apart on opposite sides of Asia.
  • Shanghai Pudong's satellite concourse would rank tenth here at 622,000 m² — but it serves two terminals rather than being one, so it does not qualify as a terminal at all.

1. Dubai International Airport Terminal 3

At 1,713,000 m², Dubai International Airport Terminal 3 is the largest airport building on Earth by floor space, and it is not close. The terminal opened in October 2008 as a dedicated home for Emirates, and most of it sits underground, tucked beneath the taxiways so that aircraft can manoeuvre over the heads of the passengers checking in below.

The figure covers three concourses. Concourse B came with the original building; Concourse C connects by walkway; and Concourse A, added in January 2013, was purpose-built for the Airbus A380 and is reached by an internal people mover. Together they make a single terminal larger than many entire airports, engineered by Arup and still comfortably the biggest thing of its kind anywhere.

2. Istanbul Airport Main Terminal

At 1,440,000 m², the Istanbul Airport Main Terminal is the second largest terminal on Earth and comfortably the biggest in Europe. Istanbul Airport was planned from the outset as a single-terminal airport, so every flight it handles — domestic and international alike — moves through this one enormous building rather than being split across a family of separate terminals.

The airport opened for full passenger service in April 2019, taking over from Atatürk as the city's main gateway and consolidating Turkish Airlines' entire network under one roof. The scale is best understood by walking it: the distance between far-flung gates runs to well over a kilometre, and the central hall was built to keep an enormous transfer operation flowing through a single security and passport core.

3. Beijing Capital International Airport Terminal 3

At 986,000 m², Beijing Capital International Airport Terminal 3 was the statement building of the 2008 Olympic year, opening in the spring ahead of that summer's Games. Designed by Foster + Partners, it was announced on opening as the largest building in the world by floor area — a title it held for barely seven months before Dubai's Terminal 3 took it that October.

The terminal is not one hall but three linked buildings — T3C, T3D and T3E — strung out along the airport's eastern edge and connected by an automated people mover that covers the distance in a few minutes. Travellers arriving from overseas land at T3E and ride the shuttle inland to immigration, a journey that gives an unusually clear sense of just how far the building stretches.

4. King Abdulaziz International Airport Terminal 1

At 810,000 m², King Abdulaziz International Airport Terminal 1 is the fourth largest airport terminal in the world and by a wide margin the biggest in Saudi Arabia. It opened softly in 2018 and was formally inaugurated the following year, replacing a pair of ageing terminals with a single building sized for 30 million passengers a year.

Jeddah is the coastal gateway for pilgrims travelling on to Mecca, and the terminal was built around that reality: the concourses are laid out to absorb enormous, highly seasonal surges rather than a steady daily trickle. The airport's celebrated Hajj Terminal, with its tented fabric roof, is a separate building altogether and does not count towards the figure above.

5. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Terminal 2

At 808,700 m², Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Terminal 2 opened in April 2018 and instantly became one of the largest terminals on the planet. It was built to take the pressure off an airport that had outgrown its original building, adding capacity for more than 45 million passengers a year in a single stroke.

Baiyun is the main hub for southern China and the Pearl River Delta, one of the most densely populated regions on Earth, and T2 was sized accordingly. The terminal is arranged as a broad central hall with long piers reaching out to the aprons, a layout that keeps the check-in and security core compact even as the gates spread across an enormous footprint.

6. Hamad International Airport Passenger Terminal

At 725,000 m², the Hamad International Airport Passenger Terminal in Doha is the sixth largest terminal in the world and the only one in Qatar. The building opened in 2014 at around 600,000 m², and a major expansion completed in November 2022 — timed to the football World Cup Qatar was hosting that winter — pushed it to its current size.

That expansion added two new concourses, D and E, along with an indoor tropical garden at the heart of the building, and lifted the terminal's annual capacity past 58 million passengers. Because Qatar Airways runs one of the world's largest transfer operations from a country of comparatively few residents, almost the entire building is designed around passengers who never leave it.

7. Xi'an Xianyang International Airport Terminal 5

At 705,500 m², Xi'an Xianyang International Airport Terminal 5 is the newest giant on this list and the largest terminal in northwestern China. It entered service in February 2025 and is, on its own, bigger than the airport's Terminals 1, 2 and 3 put together — a single building that effectively doubled the airport overnight.

Xi'an sits at the eastern end of the old Silk Road and is the gateway to the Terracotta Army, which makes it one of China's heaviest tourist-traffic airports as well as a growing domestic hub. Terminal 5 was built with that trajectory in mind, sized for a target of 83 million passengers a year by 2030.

8. Beijing Daxing International Airport Terminal

At 700,000 m², the Beijing Daxing International Airport Terminal is routinely described as the world's largest single-structure airport terminal — one continuous building rather than a cluster of linked halls. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects with ADPI and opened in September 2019, its curving starfish plan sends five concourses radiating from a central hall so that no gate is a long trek from the middle.

The 700,000 m² figure is the terminal itself. A larger number, around 1.43 million m², circulates widely but includes the ground-transport centre beneath the building, where high-speed rail and metro lines arrive, so it is not comparable with the terminal figures used here. Daxing is level to the square metre with Zayed Terminal A below it, and takes the higher rank on the larger annual capacity it was designed for.

9. Zayed International Airport Terminal A

At 700,000 m², Zayed International Airport Terminal A in Abu Dhabi ties exactly with Beijing Daxing, an unlikely dead heat between two buildings on opposite sides of Asia. Designed by KPF and opened in October 2023, it replaced Abu Dhabi's cramped older terminals with a single structure built for 45 million passengers a year.

The figure is worth stating carefully, because larger numbers are widely repeated: both the airport's own operator and KPF, the architects, put Terminal A at 700,000 m². The building is arranged around a soaring central plaza crossed by walkways, with the check-in hall, security and retail stacked so that departing passengers descend gradually towards the gates rather than tramping along a single level.

10. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Terminal 3

At 683,300 m², Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Terminal 3 is the second of this airport's two entries on the list, and the newer one — it opened at the end of October 2025 alongside a fifth runway. Guangzhou is one of very few airports anywhere with two separate terminals large enough to rank among the biggest in the world.

The terminal comprises a central main building with east and west piers, and its roof was shaped as a flower in a nod to Guangzhou's long-standing nickname, the Flower City. A railway station sits directly beneath the terminal's ground-transport centre, so passengers can step off a mainline train and walk up into departures without going outside.

11. Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 1

At 570,000 m², Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 1 is the elder statesman of this list. When it opened in July 1998 on the reclaimed island of Chek Lap Kok it was the largest airport passenger terminal building in the world, a record it held with a floor area of 550,000 m² before later expansions took it to its present size.

The building is laid out as a long Y, with a vaulted roof of repeating modules that lets daylight down onto the concourse for most of its 1.3-kilometre length. Its opening was an extraordinary piece of logistics: the airport moved wholesale from the old Kai Tak site, famous for its hair-raising approach over the rooftops of Kowloon, in a single night.

12. Suvarnabhumi Airport Main Terminal

At 563,000 m², the Suvarnabhumi Airport Main Terminal outside Bangkok was, on opening in September 2006, the largest passenger terminal ever built in a single phase — not extended piece by piece over decades, but delivered whole. It replaced Don Mueang as Bangkok's principal international gateway and remains one of Asia's busiest buildings.

The terminal is built around a soaring glass-and-steel central hall, a dramatic and famously warm space that has become one of the recognisable images of arriving in Thailand. Suvarnabhumi has since gained a midfield satellite concourse of around 251,400 m², which opened separately and, as a satellite rather than a terminal, is not counted in the figure above.

13. Kunming Changshui International Airport Terminal

At 548,300 m², the Kunming Changshui International Airport Terminal serves a city most travellers outside China have never had cause to fly to, which makes its size all the more striking. It opened in June 2012, replacing a hemmed-in city-centre airport that had no room left to grow.

Kunming is the capital of Yunnan, the mountainous province bordering Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, and Changshui was built as China's principal gateway to Southeast Asia. The terminal's long, low profile and sweeping curved roof sit on a plateau around 2,100 metres above sea level, high enough that the thin air affects how heavily loaded aircraft can take off — an operating constraint most terminals of this size never have to think about.

14. Barcelona-El Prat Airport Terminal 1

At 548,000 m², Barcelona-El Prat Airport Terminal 1 is the largest airport terminal in Spain, and it finishes just 300 m² behind Kunming — a gap of well under a tenth of a percent, and the closest thing to a photo finish on this list. It was inaugurated in June 2009 and designed by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura.

The terminal is arranged as a broad, symmetrical building with a Y-shaped pier system, finished in the pale stone, glass and greenery that Bofill favoured. It handles the overwhelming majority of Barcelona's traffic, and its scale is a reminder that European airports tend to spread across several modest terminals rather than concentrating everything into one enormous hall.

15. Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport Terminal 3A

At 530,000 m², Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport Terminal 3A closes out the fifteen. It opened in August 2017 to serve one of the fastest-growing municipalities on Earth, a mountainous, river-cut metropolis whose population runs into the tens of millions and whose airport had been comprehensively outgrown.

The terminal is topped by a rippling, wave-like roof and anchors an airport that has since expanded again: a satellite, Terminal 3B, entered service in 2025 and is connected to 3A by an underground shuttle. As a separate satellite building it is not folded into the figure above.

FAQ: The World's Biggest Airport Terminals

What is the biggest airport terminal in the world?

Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport, with 1,713,000 m² of floor area. It is the largest airport building anywhere by a wide margin, taking in three concourses — A, B and C — under a single terminal. Istanbul Airport's main terminal ranks second at 1,440,000 m².

What is the largest single-building airport terminal?

Beijing Daxing International Airport's terminal, at 700,000 m², is routinely described as the world's largest single-structure terminal — one continuous building rather than several linked halls. Larger figures approaching 1.43 million m² include the ground-transport centre beneath it, which is not part of the terminal itself.

Why is no American airport terminal on the list?

American airports tend to spread traffic across several modest terminals rather than concentrating it in one enormous building. Denver's Jeppesen Terminal, among the largest in the United States at roughly 241,500 m², is less than half the size of the terminal that ranks fifteenth here.

How is the size of an airport terminal measured?

By gross floor area in square metres, counting one terminal building plus the concourses operated as part of it. Airport-wide totals across several terminals, standalone satellite concourses serving more than one terminal, ground-transport centres and car parks are all left out, which is why published figures vary so widely.

Which country has the most of the world's biggest airport terminals?

China, with seven of the fifteen: both Beijing airports, both Guangzhou Baiyun terminals, plus Xi'an, Kunming and Chongqing. The United Arab Emirates has two, in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The remaining places go to Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Thailand, Spain and Hong Kong.
