The record

The record The biggest hotel in the world is the First World Hotel, in Malaysia — 7,351 guest rooms. Source: Guinness World Records. Verified .

The biggest hotel anyone has ever drawn up is Abraj Kudai in Mecca, a ring of twelve towers holding 10,000 bedrooms — and it has never taken a single guest, because construction stopped in 2015 and the site has sat quiet ever since. That is the first rule of this list: a hotel counts only if it is open and taking bookings today.

The second rule is what "one hotel" means. We count the rooms a single operator sells under a single name, so The Venetian's three towers count once, together, at 7,092 suites — but a precinct of separately branded hotels does not add up into one entry, however impressive the total.

That rule costs the list some famous names: Mecca's Clock Towers spread roughly 6,000 rooms across seven hotels run by seven different companies, and Macau's Londoner is four hotels behind one facade. What survives runs from 3,460 rooms to 7,351, and eleven of the fifteen stand on a single four-mile street.

Fun Facts About the World's Biggest Hotels

  • The biggest hotel ever designed has never taken a single guest — Abraj Kudai in Mecca was drawn up with 10,000 rooms in a ring of twelve towers, but construction stopped in 2015 and the site has stayed quiet since.
  • The world's-largest title used to change hands on the same street. Excalibur took it when it opened in 1990, MGM Grand took it from Excalibur three years later, and it stayed in Las Vegas until First World Hotel claimed it for Malaysia.
  • The Luxor's lifts travel diagonally. Because the pyramid's walls slope inward there is nowhere to put a vertical shaft, so its "inclinators" climb the interior corners at 39 degrees.
  • Every one of the 7,092 rooms at the second-largest hotel on Earth is a suite. The Venetian Resort has no standard rooms at all, which is rare at any size and unheard of at this one.
  • One hotel here is older than the Strip around it. The Flamingo opened at the end of 1946 with just 105 rooms, when Las Vegas Boulevard was barely a road; it now sells 3,460.
  • A ranking like this one rots faster than it looks. Macau's Sheraton Grand sat among the world's largest hotels at nearly 4,000 rooms until a 2025 rebrand reopened it as the Londoner Grand with roughly 2,405 — which is why every figure here carries the date it was checked.

With 7,351 rooms, the First World Hotel is the largest hotel on Earth, and Guinness World Records has certified it as such since it reclaimed the title in 2015. It sits at around 1,800 metres in the Titiwangsa mountains of Pahang, an hour's drive up from Kuala Lumpur, where the cloud regularly swallows the upper floors.

The hotel opened in 2006 with 6,118 rooms and grew to its present size when a second tower was completed, spreading the inventory across three candy-coloured blocks that are visible from a long way down the valley.

The rooms themselves are famously compact and famously cheap, which is the point: this is the budget engine of Resorts World Genting, a hill resort built to move enormous numbers of people through its casino, its indoor theme park and its shopping floors. Guests arrive by road or on the Awana SkyWay cable car, and the scale downstairs matches the scale upstairs — the lobby handles queues that would look at home in an airport terminal.

The Venetian Resort sells 7,092 suites, which makes it the largest hotel in the United States and the only property outside Malaysia on this list above 5,000 rooms. The figure is the sum of two towers that operate as one resort: The Venetian's own 4,049 suites and The Palazzo's 3,043 next door.

Every room is a suite, which is unusual at this scale, and the smallest of them is larger than a standard room in most of the hotels ranked below it.

It opened in 1999 on the site of the old Sands, and the Venice theme is pursued with real commitment — a canal runs through the shopping arcade with gondoliers working it, and a campanile and a version of the Doge's Palace face the Strip. The resort changed hands in 2022, when the operating business was bought by Apollo Global Management and the real estate by VICI Properties, though the name and the gondolas stayed exactly where they were.

MGM Grand Las Vegas holds 4,762 rooms behind its emerald-green glass, and the number is smaller than it used to be by design. The hotel opened in 1993 with 5,005 rooms, enough to make it the largest in the world at the time, and a renovation completed in 2025 knocked some of the smallest rooms together to create additional suites — 752 of them in total — trimming the overall count in exchange for bigger keys.

The scale is easiest to grasp from the Strip, where a bronze lion the height of a house guards a frontage that runs for most of a block. Inside, the property functions as a small city: a 17,000-capacity arena that hosts championship boxing and touring stadium acts, a pool complex with a lazy river, and a casino floor that was for years the largest in Nevada. It anchors the southern end of the Strip alongside its MGM stablemates.

Wynn Las Vegas counts 4,748 rooms and suites, a figure its parent company reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission as a single integrated resort even though the guest-facing brand is really two: Wynn, which opened in 2005, and Encore, which joined it in 2008. The two bronze-glass crescents curve along the Strip in near-identical profile, connected by an indoor esplanade, and the room inventory is managed as one pool across both.

Steve Wynn built it on the site of the Desert Inn, which he bought largely to obtain the land, and the design deliberately broke with the theming that had defined the Strip for a decade — no pyramid, no canal, no castle, just a curved tower screened from the road by a man-made hill of mature trees. The result reads as more restrained than its neighbours despite being one of the largest hotels on the planet.

The Luxor's 4,407 rooms are split between the most recognisable silhouette on the Strip and the two towers that were added beside it. The pyramid is 30 storeys of black glass, and because the walls slope inward there is no conventional lift shaft: guests ride "inclinators" that climb the interior corners at an angle of 39 degrees. The atrium they look down into is the largest in the world by volume.

It opened in 1993, the same year as MGM Grand, at the height of the era when Las Vegas resorts competed on spectacle rather than luxury. A beam of light fires vertically from the apex after dark, visible from aircraft a long way out, and a sphinx and an obelisk stand between the pyramid and the road. The Egyptian theme has been softened indoors over the years, but the building itself was never going to be understated.

Ambassador City Jomtien offers 4,219 rooms, which makes it comfortably the largest hotel in Thailand and the only entry on this list in Southeast Asia outside Malaysia. The rooms are spread across five wings of very different heights — a 42-storey Tower Wing, a 17-storey Ocean Wing, and three low-rise blocks — arranged over a site of around 40 acres facing the Gulf of Thailand.

It opened in 1988, roughly eight kilometres south of Pattaya at Na Chom Thian, and was built around conference and tour-group business rather than individual travellers, which is how a hotel of this size came to exist on a quiet stretch of coast.

The grounds include a convention centre, a sports complex and a swimming pool the resort has long promoted as one of the largest in Asia. The beach in front of it is noticeably calmer than the Pattaya seafront up the road.

Aria Resort & Casino carries 4,004 rooms in two glass towers that curve away from each other in a shallow S, and it was the centrepiece of CityCenter, a development that cost roughly $8.5 billion and opened in December 2009 into the worst possible market. The building was designed with sustainability as a stated goal and earned LEED Gold certification, which was close to unheard of for a casino resort at the time.

What sets it apart from the older giants around it is the absence of a theme. There is no pyramid, no canal and no castle: Aria is a modern hotel that happens to be enormous, with an angular glass exterior and a large collection of commissioned public art distributed through the property.

Guest rooms were among the first on the Strip to hand over the curtains, lighting and temperature to a bedside tablet, a novelty in 2009 that has since become ordinary.

8. Excalibur Hotel and Casino

Excalibur's 3,981 rooms sit inside what is unmistakably a cartoon castle — white towers capped with red, blue and gold turrets, a drawbridge over a moat, and a frontage that has been photographed by more or less everyone who has walked the south Strip.

It opened in June 1990 as the largest hotel in the world and held that title until MGM Grand opened three years later, a distinction this stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard has traded back and forth ever since.

The Arthurian theme is pursued without embarrassment: a dinner show seats guests around an arena for jousting on horseback, and the lower level is dressed as a medieval village. It is one of the more affordable big rooms on the Strip, and it connects by a free tram and a footbridge to Luxor and Mandalay Bay, making the three of them function as a single very long walk under one roof.

Caesars Palace holds 3,960 rooms across six towers that were added one at a time over more than half a century — the original Roman Tower in 1966, then Nobu, Forum, Palace, Augustus and finally Octavius in 2012. That accretion is why the property sprawls the way it does, and why finding your room can involve a genuinely long indoor walk from the casino floor.

It opened in 1966 with the deliberate conceit that the guest was the Caesar, an idea expressed in marble, columns and a great many statues, and it has stayed near the centre of Las Vegas culture ever since. The Forum Shops arcade beneath it runs a painted sky that cycles from dawn to dusk on a loop, and The Colosseum next door was purpose-built for long-running headline residencies, a format that has since spread across the city.

Bellagio's 3,933 rooms arrived in two instalments: 3,005 when the resort opened in 1998, and a further 928 when the Spa Tower was completed in December 2004. It was built on the site of the Dunes and was, at the time, the most expensive hotel ever constructed, a bet that Las Vegas would pay for restraint and quality rather than another theme.

The fountains are the reason most people stop outside. They occupy an 8.5-acre lake between the hotel and the Strip and fire in choreographed sequences to music through the afternoon and evening, and they are free to watch from the pavement. Inside, the lobby ceiling carries a Dale Chihuly glass installation of more than two thousand hand-blown blossoms, and the conservatory beyond it is replanted several times a year by a full-time horticultural team.

Circus Circus Las Vegas has 3,767 rooms and a genuine big top, under which trapeze artists and acrobats perform free shows above the casino floor throughout the day. It opened in 1968 as an adults-only casino with circus acts overhead, then reinvented itself as the Strip's family resort, adding hotel towers and a manor-house block over the following decades.

The Adventuredome behind it is a five-acre indoor theme park under a pink glass dome, with roller coasters running inside — a useful thing to have in a city where summer afternoons regularly pass 40°C.

Phil Ruffin bought the property in 2019 and has been renovating it in stages since. It sits at the northern end of the Strip, a fair walk from the newer resorts, which is part of why its rooms remain among the cheapest of any hotel on this list.

Paris Las Vegas now sells 3,672 rooms, a total that jumped in 2024 when Caesars transferred one of the neighbouring Horseshoe towers across and rebranded it as the Versailles tower, adding 756 rooms to the 2,916 the hotel had carried since it opened. That single move lifted it several places up a ranking it had never previously come close to entering.

The draw out front is a half-scale Eiffel Tower with legs that come down through the roof of the casino, and an observation deck 46 storeys up that looks straight across at the Bellagio fountains.

A version of the Arc de Triomphe and a Paris Opera House facade complete the streetscape. The hotel opened in 1999, at the end of the decade in which the Strip rebuilt itself around replicas of other places, and it remains one of the most committed of them.

Fontainebleau Las Vegas opened with 3,644 rooms in December 2023, which made it the newest hotel of this size anywhere in the world and the first genuinely large resort to open at the northern end of the Strip in years. The 67-storey tower had stood unfinished for well over a decade — construction began in 2007, stalled in the financial crisis, and passed through several owners before the original developer bought it back and completed it.

The finished building is sheathed in blue glass and tapers as it rises, and it takes its name and its design language from the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, the 1954 Morris Lapidus hotel that helped define mid-century Miami. Inside it leans hard into that inheritance, with bow-tie floor patterns and curved forms quoting the Florida original. It is the tallest occupiable building in Nevada.

The Shinagawa Prince Hotel has around 3,560 rooms across four towers, making it the largest hotel in Japan by a wide margin and the only Japanese entry on this list. Its Main, Annex, North and East towers stand together in Takanawa, about two minutes' walk from Shinagawa Station, which puts guests on the Shinkansen network and roughly twenty minutes from Haneda Airport.

Rooms here are compact even by the standards of large city hotels, which is how a single Tokyo property fits this many of them onto a constrained site.

The compound around them is unusually well equipped: it contains a large aquarium with a dolphin show, a bowling alley, a cinema complex and tennis courts, so much of what a guest might leave a hotel to do is available without crossing a road. It is run by Prince Hotels, part of the Seibu group.

15. Flamingo Las Vegas

Flamingo Las Vegas, World
Source: andrebarreto on Pixabay

The Flamingo's 3,460 rooms close out this list, and the hotel behind them is by some distance the oldest thing on it. It opened at the end of 1946, backed by mob money and driven by Bugsy Siegel, when the Las Vegas Strip was barely a road with a few roadhouses on it, and it is the oldest resort still operating on the Strip today.

Nothing of the 1946 building survives — the property has been rebuilt in stages, most of the present room count arriving in towers added through the late 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

What has survived is the name and the pink neon, and the grounds behind the casino hold a genuine wildlife habitat where Chilean flamingos, pelicans and koi live among the palms and waterfalls. It is free to walk through, and it is one of the quietest corners of the middle Strip.

FAQ: The World's Biggest Hotels

What is the biggest hotel in the world?

The First World Hotel at Resorts World Genting in Malaysia, with 7,351 rooms across three towers. Guinness World Records has certified it as the largest hotel by room count since it regained the title in 2015, when a second tower took it past the 6,118 rooms it opened with in 2006.

What is the biggest hotel in the United States?

The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas, at 7,092 suites. That figure combines two towers its operator sells as one resort — The Venetian's 4,049 suites and The Palazzo's 3,043. It is the only hotel outside Malaysia on this list above 5,000 rooms, and every one of its rooms is a suite.

Why isn't the 10,000-room hotel in Mecca on this list?

Because Abraj Kudai has never opened. Building work stopped in 2015 and the towers have stood unfinished ever since, with no date announced for guests. A hotel qualifies here only if it is open and taking bookings, so a design on that scale earns no place until it actually receives visitors.

How do you decide what counts as one hotel?

We count the rooms a single operator sells under a single name. Several towers can count together when they share one inventory, as The Venetian's do. A precinct of separately branded hotels does not, which is why Mecca's Clock Towers and Macau's Londoner are absent despite very large combined totals.

Why are so many of the biggest hotels in Las Vegas?

Because Las Vegas is almost the only place that built single hotels at this scale. Elsewhere, huge room counts are usually reached by clustering several hotels into one resort district. Eleven of these fifteen sit on one four-mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard, competing directly on size for decades.

Does this ranking change?

Regularly, and not on any fixed schedule. Renovations can shrink a hotel as easily as expansions grow it — a 2025 refurbishment cut MGM Grand's count by combining smaller rooms into suites — while rebrands can move thousands of rooms out of the reckoning overnight. This list is re-checked against operator figures, so it is the place to see where the order actually stands.
